A classic epic story of the Big Red One, the nickname of the 1st Infantry Division of the United States Army. Established on June 8, 1917, the First Infantry Division has taken part in nearly every American War and is the longest continuously serving division of the U.S. Army. The 1st Infantry Division was the first unit to deploy and engage in battle during WWI, WWII, and Vietnam. Lee Marvin and others including Luke Skywalker shined in this! It's long at over 3 hours but an absolute must see!

Great movie, great DVD set (The Reconstruction). 162 minutes compared to 113 on the regular release. The added scenes bring it all together taking it from good to great. Many special features:
- "The Real Glory: Reconstructing "The Big Red One" - "Meeting Sam", "The Survivors", "Lee Marvin", "The Reconstruction" with Richard Schickel who produced it. With Samuel Fuller and people involved discussing him, the movie and the putting together of The Reconstruction. Good stuff here. 47 minutes.
- "The Men Who Made The Movies: Samuel Fuller. 54 minutes.
- Anatomy of a Scene. 18+ minutes.
- Alternate Scenes, with Brian Hamblin, Post-Production Supervisor of The Reconstruction. Technical information(how, what, why) they were not in movie. Some good stuff including Sam's young daughter Samantha. 32 minutes.
- A War Department film from 1946 titled "The Fighting First. 12+ minutes.
- A Promo reel containing portions of the missing scenes discovered by Warner Brothers in 1999 that was the inspiration for The Reconstruction. 30 minutes.
- Stills Gallery.
- Trailers: "Fuller's Story" :30, "Sergeant" :30 , "Reconstruction" 2:15 .

I have enjoyed the movie since I first saw it, and wanted to get a copy for myself. My father was in the 1st Inf. Div. in WW II. The reconstructed version is great, since I last saw the movie on VHS, but I have not viewed the second disc yet.
