Movie Reviews

Cabaret Classic!!!!!
Norman G. Lopez | 11/30/2005
(5 out of 5 stars)

"I am a live concert DVD fan. I love to see sophisticated and talented entertainers at the top of their game, up-close and personal. Blood & Feathers is a fabulous example of the art of Cabaret by a master of this art form. Ute Lemper brings the audience, both at the Carlyle and at home on her lunar journey through the 20th century. Her ability to weave together French, German and American melodies from early Piaf and Kurt Weil and Marlena Dietrich to Joni Mitchell and Stephen Sondheim is truly inspired. In addition, her interpretations of each of the songs in the revue truly resonated with me. And her arrangements are beyond imagination in creativity and being right on. I was totally blown away by her rendition of that old Weil chestnut, September Song. Pure magic!! Thank you Ute. I really did not know your talent before seeing this DVD, but you have a new fan. This is one of the best concerts in my 52 DVD collection. What a gem."
Changed my mind!

"I originally gave this DVD one star - not because of Ms. Lemper or her performance, but simply because it appears on this DVD, at least at first glance, that she's lip-synching to her own live album.

The more I watch it, the more I come to realise that no, she IS performing live - but the frankly stupid sound 'engineering' and dreadfully annoying camerawork and post-editing make it appear as though she's miming.

Ute Lemper is almost genius in her performance - her interpretation of hoary old Weil chestnuts like "Pirate Jenny", "Mack The Knife" and other tired cabaret standards like "Moondance" and "Lili Marlene" is quite, quite incredible - because of Ms. Lemper's excellent, original voice and her understated, predatory body language we see and hear these songs as though for the first time. She takes these songs and makes them her own, and they become beautiful and exciting performances, no matter how many times we've seen them before.

I'm giving this DVD three stars for the annoying editing and interferences of the director and sound engineer - they've castrated what is, in it live state, one of the greatest performances I've ever seen. I'd happily recommend the live album recording of this concert over this DVD - it's precisely the same soundtrack, and you'll not have to deal with the irritation."
Ute is wundervoll!!!

"Have been an Ute Lemper fan for years and this DVD does not disappoint. Her renditions of old favorties is exciting and fun as is her manner of switching languages in mid stream.
Unlike another reviewer I loved the visuals, swithcing from color to B&W and felt it was done so well as to enhance the overall experience."
Une chanteuse extraordinaire - with a touch of magic

"BLOOD AND FEATHERS captures Ute Lemper's cabaret act with beautiful cinematography and great sound. Miss Lemper sings numerous songs ranging from Friedrich Holländer to Joni Mitchell, with one song by the chanteuse herself (and a great song it is, too!) and several by the inevitable Kurt Weill. Dramaturgically, the songs are very well chosen and in perfect order - with the menacing PIRATE JENNY as an inspired choice for a first number. And that touch of magic? The DVD is put together from two performances, which leads to humorous continuity problems - at one point a glass becomes a huge feather boa. Only a vocal magician like Miss Lemper could do that :-) ."
