Glorious singing of Beethoven's masterpiece
John F. Cahill | 08/03/2008
(5 out of 5 stars)

"This is a superb production in every way. The orchestra, conductor (Mariss Jansons), soloists, and chorus are excellent. The sound is quite good considering the limitations of the acoustics in the Paul VI Hall at the Vatican.
Beethoven's 9th Symphony was performed in the presence of Pope Benedict XVI who addressed the audience at the conclusion of the concert.
A wonderful addition to the program is the motet Tu Es Petrus (You are Peter) by Palestrina - a beautiful piece honoring the Pope as the successor to the Apostle Peter.
Buy this DVD and be thrilled with a lovely performance."
Benedict XVI interprets Beethoven
Daniel Conway | Louisville, KY | 06/17/2008
(5 out of 5 stars)

"A magnificent, heartfelt and faith-filled performance of Beethoven's 9th Symphony. Be sure to watch the post-concert remarks of Pope Benedict XVI who offers a profound and inspiring interpretation of the composer's "dark night of the soul" and of the personal transformation that resulted in this monumental work."
