Director James Wan made a splash in the horror genre with Saw, a rather ingenious midnight movie that spawned a legion of splattery imitators. Rather than continue in that overtly grody mode, however, Wan chose to move on,...  more »

The Conjuring did not deliver the chills that I was expecting. I don't feel that the movie was at all scary. It felt like a walk down horror memory lane, with several nods to better horror films of yesteryear.

Having read The Demonologist, a book co-written by the Warrens (the main characters in the film), I felt that the movie missed an opportunity to deliver some genuine scares.

I really liked the way the film started, with the background story of the Annabelle doll. Unfortunately, the filmmakers did not recognize the fact that they could have intertwined several of the Warrens' encounters into a terrifying horror film, without it becoming a campy anthology film.

One example... the scene with the reporter at their house (which was totally pointless and uninteresting, by the way) was a missed opportunity to continue the Annabelle doll story. A true follow-up actually did happen, where a man who mocked the doll died on his motorcycle on the way home from their house. They could have easily incorporated that into the scene with the reporter, but did not.
