Movie Reviews

Final Damnation-The Damned
James A. Wright | Dixon, IL United States | 12/02/2003
(4 out of 5 stars)

"Excitement mixed with frustrated disappointment might be the way to describe my reaction to this DVD. No doubt, the performance by The Damned is terrific: their musicianship, comedic banter, and stage presence has always outshown their punk/pop/rock contemporaries. However, the new intro banter by the mystery DJ (Is that Alexi Sayle of Young Ones fame, now 20 years older?) had me bellowing with rage at the TV screen by mid-show. Especially infuriating was his inane voiceover smack-in-the-middle of "Smash it Up", though his cut-in voiceovers drowning out Vanian's and Sensible's banter and the song intros ocurred on most of the tracks. What was the relavance of this additional material, and whose idea was it? I suspect The Damned haven't control of this material, so whomever does did as he liked in presenting it.If you're a Damned fan, go ahead buy this DVD as what remains of the show is still well worth seeing and hearing (sound quality is pretty good), but be forewarned that the additional material by the mystery DJ will diminish the experience."
Totally Ruined!!! A Damn Shame!! Find the VHS ! Version!!

"Two of my friends bought the vhs in '88. So I know this very well. It's such a great concert, funny interviews-totally Damned. W/ the dvd, however, they added recently shot narration. You see a guy, edited in, actually reading before and during every song!!!! I CANNOT begin to tell you how ANNOYING THIS IS!!! As if the viewer is such an idiot and can't catch all the quick, jibes and moves The Damned do on stage. ie) when Dave winks at a girl during New Rose. I caught that 15 years ago!! He mentions this as the first Damned DVD- cheesy!!!! But I guess Sanctuary or whoever thought they better explain the concert to us!! Idiots! The consistency is ruined!! Also, the guys' voice is very annoying. I ended up trading it for one of the above mentioned friend's VHS version. I tell you, hunt this VHS down it will save you complete frustration!! In addition, the added features are not worth buying this for either. The Bryan James interview is good, but not THAT good.
Truly a tragedy!!! I can only hope for a career retro DVD- may never happen!!"

"It made 5 years than I'm a fan of the Damned. If their records are rather easy to find in good records shop, I was totally despair to don't find any videos from that greatest band. And now, it's possible to see Dave, Captain, Rat and Brian on screen!
It's a rather good dvd, but the show is damped by the regular intervention of a speaker who tells some notes about of each songs. It's totally break the power of the live. I think than his comment could be added on a separate soundtrack (as it do for director comments on collector dvds). The bonus are not so good. I'd like to see much videos documents inside. Well they do better next time! As I know, an another dvd from the Damned is preview! It will be their live at the Bush Empire than they gave some weeks ago. Coming soon!"
Damned good DVD except for the comentary.

"I love this performance, anything by the damned is always a treat but like other fans I found that the comentary on this dvd is annoying to say the least. Not only is it irrelevent, but sin of sins, it is always placed over the amusing banter between Captain and Dave. My friend's boyfriend managed to find her a VHS version of this concert without the comentary and I am so jealous. However there is a silver lining... go out and buy Tiki Nightmare, the 2002 performance, this is a great concert that shows the damned have still got it.If anyone in the video world is listening, rerelease this DVD WITHOUT the comentary or if you must have it put it on a separate track. It will be worth your while cause all damned fans will buy another copy, me included."
