Movie Reviews

Great band, not so great movie
Scott Richardson | Chicago, IL USA | 01/29/2004
(3 out of 5 stars)

"I love the Dream Syndicate. Live at Raji's is, I think, one of the best live albums of all time. This movie, unfortunately, isn't good. Neither is the disc. The movie seems to be a randomly-assembled collection of footage (the band doing a soundcheck, the band doing radio interviews, the band playing, the band hanging out at an amusement park) rather than a coherent film. I'm not asking for a plot or anything, but a little bit of structure would have helped. Also, don't be duped into thinking that this is a live concert DVD. There are a number of segments of the band playing live, but they aren't even complete songs. The sound and video on this disc are pretty bad. It looks like it's been transferred from an old video (which I'm sure it was) and not treated whatsoever. The sound is ragged, but not in a cool rock 'n' roll kind of way (though I can't speak for the 5.1 mix as I don't have a 5.1 system). While the film has a few interesting moments, it's only really for absolute Dream Syndicate completists who have to have everything they ever did. The rest of the world should wait for the 2-disc Live At Raji's which has been promised for this year."
