The sci-fi was cool but the plotline fell short, something Matt Damon could not even save!

Lazy writing limits the potential of this nicely budgeted sci-fi action film. The tech and CG are very good, so it's really unfortunate that a weak script with plot holes and overly cinematic character behavior is the culprit for making this move fairly mediocre - it deserved better. Jodie Foster does quite well with a one-dimensional character. I'm not sure how an underground trafficking organization manages the financial resources to fund the construction of routine interplanetary vessels while also apparently operating in nearly plain sight given the observational capabilities of the Elysium station. A little care and attention to backstory and the appropriate explanation here or there would have gone a long way in making this, and many other story elements, work. Damon's final scene is a bit overdone and the epilogue is childishly utopian, but there are some solid action scenes interspersed with the predictable ones. Overall, a serviceable, if throwaway, action film for an evening's enjoyment.
