Ghoulies I
Take your typical horror plot: An infant is rescued from the clutches of an evil cult, and the kid grows up to be strangely (conveniently) drawn back in to practicing black magic when he inherits the old cult house, because his dad was the cult leader. Now, preface this script with the fact that ‘Gremlins’ was an amazing success, and you get studio execs saying “Hey! Let’s do that with this movie!” I have no idea if this is what happened in the making of Ghoulies, but it sure seems like it. The Ghoulies are nothing more than window dressing on an otherwise dull plot. They are not even really seen much until about an hour into the movie, which is too late to be much fun. Up to that point, the biggest special effect is the lead character’s misapplied glow-in-the-dark contact lenses – it’s like he’s doing a Marty Feldman impersonation most of the time when he has them in. The fact that Ghoulies is trying to capitalize on Gremlins is not surprising, but to name the movie after them, and then not use them is sadly the most unexpected part of this relatively weak effort at horror comedy.

Ghoulies II
A rare case where the sequel is much better than the original – not great, but much better. Lots of ghoulie puppet and stop-motion action in this film as they practice murderous mischief at a carnival. Basically an R-rated version of Gremlins with a bare-bones backstory. This is the movie you expect to see with low budget effects and acting to match. Don’t bother with Ghoulies I and skip to this one if you pick up this two-fer of Ghoulies movies on DVD. The rating is a hybrid of the two films – a half star for number one and 3 stars for number two equals 2 stars rounded up.
