This Movie is depressing. It is a tragic story where no one wins. I would not recommend this movie to anyone

I had first viewed this film in 2004 when it came out on DVD and then in August, I read the book for my book club and couldn't wait to see the film again! I requested it on SwapaDVD and voila! The movie made more sense after I had read the book and I actually liked the film better.

I felt I had to read the book after seeing the movie. It was a disturbing movie. The events were tragic.

Very riveting psychological drama that shows the misunderstandings that can arise between people of different cultures and how, ultimately, we are all just reacting to the storylines we concoct (perceive?) in our own heads. How people from different backgrounds, with different histories, different experiences, can perceive the same situation so utterly differently. How "I" and "me" ultimately almost always prevails, especially under stress. And, in this case, the dire and truly unnecessary sad consequences that result from this chemistry.

I had read the book before seeing the movie and was surprised to find how true the movie stayed to the original story. So rare these days...

If you like great acting, a strong storyline, well-developed characters and an excellent script within a tense, unrelenting drama... you will love this movie.

Be prepared to an intense, shocking emotional journey!

(5 out of 5 stars)

"Have you ever lost everything you worked for and your life became focused only on restoring your legacy? Have you been extremely depressed that even opening your mail became an extraordinarily difficult task? Has fate treated you so horribly that you keep going in circles without a chance to catch your breath? Has your life revolved around one thing, and one thing only, that without it, you started to lose your existential footing? If you never experienced despair before, or your intellect is a shallow lake, you might miss the point of this movie and judge it harshly like many reviewers. On the other hand, you might be lucky enough to understand the real meaning of life and empathize with each and every character in this movie. I thought no movie could replicate the greatness and depth of the book, but with phenomenal performances by all and equally fantastic direction, this movie captures the essence of the book and lead you down a deep well of insight and intense feeling. Enjoy!"
