DVD Review
D. Olson | Iowa | 08/19/2005
(2 out of 5 stars)

"This DVD is okay with very little instructional value. The program is done in interview form with very little teaching. A bad DVD for someone who is trying to get into jazz-funk playing but probably resourceful for those familiar with the genre."
A must for fans of Sco's "Blue Matter" period.

"For those familiar with John's "Blue Matter" jazz/funk period, this DVD and Jazz Funk Guitar II are a must. I would argue with another reviewer here that there's actually good instructional value here. It's very hard to create a video lesson that's going to work for an individual, and Sco is best when he's in the driver's seat (not the case here as this is in more of an interview format). The chemistry between the members of this band is amazing, and you can learn a lot from just watching that. Every drummer and bassist should check out Gary Grainger and Dennis Chambers here too - perhaps the funkiest rhythm section to have ever existed!"
This DVD is an incredible lesson

"John Scofield has played with Miles Davis and is an incredible guitarist. After watching only the first 20 minutes I learned a lot.

The DVD shows Scofield playing with a band and then him giving a lesson. The way he explains harmony, how he applies it to the guitar and how he practices it is what makes this an incredible lesson. The way he practices affects what he plays and the way his ideas sound, his feel. This is what makes him a great guitarist and is probably why Miles Davis asked him to play in his band."
For advanced players

"This is just meant as a short comment, not a review..

The video does not carry traits of the typical _instructional_ video. It's more talking about guitar and different solutions in jazz. Although everybody can learn something from it, I think it'll suit advanced players the best! It's a good video, but not excactly what I was looking for in an instructional dvd..!"
