Reggae music grew out of the Rastafari movement and was made popular throughout the world by the Jamaican singer and songwriter Bob Marley. Legend is a compilation of Bob Marley's most well-known and timeless recordings, and includes interviews with him intermixed with live music video.

Rastafari is a religious and political movement, begun in Jamaica in the 1930s and adopted by many groups around the globe that combines Protestant Christianity, mysticism and a pan-African political consciousness. Rastas see their past, present, and future in a distinct way. Drawing from Old Testament stories, especially that of Exodus, they “overstand” (rather than understand) people of African descent in the Americas and around the world to be in Babylon. They believe that they are being tested by Jah (God) through slavery and the existence of economic injustice and racial downpression (rather than oppression). Rastas await their deliverance from captivity and their return to Zion, the symbolic name for Africa drawn from the biblical tradition.

You hear the references to Jah, Zion (Africa) and Rastafari in his lyrics. His commentary underscores the deeper meaning of his music. It is ironic how a political activist is so universally loved. Legend, both the DVD and the CD, are wonderful additions to music lovers' collections. Included is the "Time Will Tell" documentary in which Marley talks about his personal beliefs, and how Rastas were targeted in an attempt to suppress them.
