Movie Reviews

A Great Showcase for a Southern Rock Institution
Jazz Hermit | Tucson, AZ United States | 09/22/2007
(5 out of 5 stars)

"If you want an earful of Southern Rock a great place to start is by listening to Lynryd Skynyrd, the band that all but defined the genre back in the day. Similarly, Austin City Limits sets the standard for televised concert performances with a no-nonsense presentation that highlights the music, the artists and the performance without any extraneous content.

The Live in Austin, Texas performance of Lynyrd Skynyrd gives the viewer a perfect chance to see a performance in a fairly intimate venue yet without the background noise or other distractions of a night club. It's obvious that the production crew understands how to tape a concert. The camera work and editing is flawless, you are always able to see the action you want to see and you don't find yourself looking at a tight shot of the rhythm guitarist's hands while the lead player is taking his solo.

All in all it makes for a very satisfying viewing experience and a great way to enjoy the reborn Lynyrd Skynyrd which is as close as any of us will get to seeing them live in 1974."
Horrible Guitar Mix!
Big Andy | Staten Island, New York USA | 08/17/2007
(3 out of 5 stars)

"This is a cool little dvd, very scaled down skynyrd show. Seeing Needle and the Spoon was worth the purchase price for me. However the guitar mix is jaw droppingly amateurish with Gary Rossington's guitar totally lost in the mix. Even when he's playing the opening of Freebird, you can't hear it!Ricky and Hughie's guitars are loud and clear but it's as if the producers totally forget to turn Gary up in the mix. Having said that you'll hear Billy Powell's keys loud and clear. Probably just about worth the price especially used."
LYNYRD SKYNYRD "LIVE FROM AUSTIN" - DVD
Gary Covington | Louisiana | 01/31/2009
(5 out of 5 stars)

"OUTSTANDING!!! 5 STARS ALL THE WAY!!! THIS IS A "MUST HAVE" FOR ANY LYNYRD SKYNYRD FAN, AND I'M A FAN TO THE BONE!!! I LOVE LYNYRD SKYNYRD, THEY ARE INDUCTEES INTO THE ROCK & ROLL HALL OF FAME!!! I HAVE SEEN THEN PERFORM LIVE MANY TIMES. AS THE HARD ROCK CAFE IN BILOXI, MS PUT IT DURING THEIR GRAND OPENING YEAR: LYNYRD SKYNYRD MAY VERY WELL BE THE BEST ROCK & ROLL BAND EVER!!

THIS IS SIMPLY AN OUTSTANDING PERFORMANCE BY LYNYRD SKYNYRD ON THE AUSTIN CITY LIMITS TV SHOW, FILMED ON DECEMBER 15, 1999. YOU GET THE CLASSIC "ALLSTAR" LINE-UP OF RICKEY MEDLOCKE, THE LATE HUGHIE THOMASSON, AND GARY ROSSINGTON ALL ON GUITAR, AND THE LATE LEON WILKESON ON BASS, BILL POWELL ON PIANO, MICHAEL CARTELLONE ON DRUMS, JOHNNY VAN ZANT ON LEAD VOCALS, AND CAROL CHASE AND DALE ROSSINGTON ON BACK-UP VOCALS.

TWO OF ABOVE MUISICIANS HAVE DIED SINCE THIS DVD AND THIS WAS PROBABLY THE LAST CONCERT DVD THAT THE LATE LEON WILKESON WAS ON, AND THAT MAKES IT THAT MUCH MORE SPECIAL!!!

YOU GET SOME SONGS FROM THE "EDGE OF FOREVER" ALBUM CD, SUCH AS "EDGE OF FOREVER" AND "WORKIN", ALSO YOU GET A REAL TREAT - THE 1920'S JIMMIE RODGER'S CLASSIC "T FOR TEXAS"!!! THIS IS THE FIRST TIME THIS HAS BEEN ON A SKYNYRD DVD SINCE THE LATE RONNIE VAN ZANT ERA AND THE "FREEBIRD THE MOVIE" DVD.

YOU ALSO, GET THE CLASSICS LIKE "SWEET HOME ALABAMA" AND "FREEBIRD" ALONG WITH OTHERS. THE APPROX. RUN TIME IS 67 MINUTES.

THIS IS A GREAT ONE, AND I DEFINIELY RECOMMEND IT ALL THE WAY!!!"
