Movie Reviews

One of Lucio Fulci's weaker efforts

"When it comes to Lucio Fulci a lot of fans are split. Some see him as an Icon and others see him as a hack director who can only deliver gore scenes and cashed in on the success of George A. Romero's Dawn of the Dead.

Murder Rock isn't your typical Lucio Fulci film; if you are expecting a gorefest, well you will not find that here. When it comes to Fulci I have this love/hate thing with him and I really wanted this to be a great flick to show people Lucio can do more than gore.

Sadly though Murder Rock was pretty much a waste. You can read the plot description here so I won't go into detail.

Murder Rock, which also goes under the title of Slashdance (great title) is Flash Dance meeets a Giallo. It really has all the makings of a great cult classic.

Murder Rock starts off well enough, but falls flat. And no it wasn't the lack of gore is why it fell flat. Some movies need a lot of gore and a high body count to work some don't. Sadly Murder Rock needed the gore and body count. Gore wise all we get is a couple of drops of blood.

The first 30-min or so are fairly good with some decent suspense, but after that it slows down and can get quite boring. For who the killer is I guessed it halfway through, while I don't think it was obvious it really isn't a suprise either.

For those who haven't seen this if you really wanna see it I doubt my review will sway you. But when it comes to Fulci or Italian horror in general you can find a lot better than this.

Murder Rock isn't a terrible film by any means, but it's just too slow. Fulci knows how to create great atmosphere and makes scenes creepier than they should be, but you won't find that here.

I'm glad Media-Blasters are putting flicks like this out. Anchor Bay just seems to put out 3 or 4 versions of 1 movie these days, but of all the Fulci flicks I have to question why this one?

Overall Murder Rock fails to deliver, great premise that just doesn't go anywhere."
A different Fulci...

"...I had never heard of this movie before I saw myself staring at it at the store. As soon as I saw the name "Fulci" I was almost sold. I knew being a different kind of film from the usual Fulci gorefests, that this one would not be like those, but I gave it a chance anyway. I was surprised, it was not as bad as I thought it would be. In this movie you can see a different type of Fulci, as there is not gore---yes there is killing but it is only stabbing. I liked the 80's music, it gave the film authenticity for its time. If you appreciate the work of Lucio Fulci give this one a try, it is different from his other films, but not bad by any means. I liked it way better than Anthropaphagus (I know they have nothing in common, but I feel I wasted by money on that stinker). Worth viewing at least once, if you can afford it I would add it to your library of Fulci works."
Doesn't deserve such low ratings.

"Ok, it's nowhere near as good as Zombi 2, The Beyond, City Of The Living Dead, Lizard In A Woman's Skin, Don't Torture A Duckling, etc... But it's still a pretty good movie! It has a few plot holes, it doesn't have any gore (surprisingly) and the music is really cheesy, but it's pretty entertaining, it has a great suspensful atmosphere (during the killings) and a great twist ending (the killer is the character that I expected the least to be the killer)!

See it, but don't expect too much.

3.5 stars."
