A well written and acted film about a man facing the demons of his past and attempting to right his wrongs. What I liked best about this movie was the avoidance of cliched character behavior - the characters actually seem very realistic in what they do given the circumstances. That being said, some aspects of the film unfortunately didn't gel for me as an American. The extra features make the point that the film didn't do well in America because Americans didn't like a European telling them about their country . . . I disagree. I think it doesn't play well for Americans because it is slightly off focus with respect to what Americans find interesting about the Southwestern deserts or small rural communities. In other words, the film focuses on things that Europeans find fascinating, but an American finds commonplace. So this is not to say Wenders was wrong in what he did - it's likely that an American making a film about Europe in the same vein would have the same problem.
