To have empathy means to be able to put yourself into somebody else's shoes; to be able to actually see things from their perspective and see and understand why a person might be feeling something. So, if they are feeling ... more »pain - for you to understand why they are feeling that pain. Or if they are feeling happy - to be able to understand why they are feeling happy. That is simply the ability to have empathy.
To display empathy means to be able to change your own emotion to be able to share the experience with somebody else who might be having another emotion. So, not only can you see it and understand it, but you can actually experience it with them.

The development of empathy comes very much from upbringing, conditioning, schooling, your family and your life experience. But, it is true that there are some people who are not born with an emotional chip at all. If you don't have an empathy chip, you can read correctly that somebody is upset but you can't actually work out why. And this of course impacts greatly on relationships!
