Movie Reviews

I'm a fan and I hated this DVD
Jennifer Wood | Kissimmee, FL, United States | 07/12/2001

"I belong to the Ricky Martin fan club, and to be honest, I really hated the Europa DVD. I thought since it was done by family and friends, it would have lot of behind-the-scenes conversations, like "this is what Ricky's like offstage" kind of things. Instead, it was like watching the home videos my dad made of me in high school when I performed in the jazz band...shaky footage, bad camera angles, and whoever did the editing had WAY too much time to play with special effects. Zoom in on Ricky's nosehairs, zoom out to a shot from the nosebleed seats, jump here, jump there, stop motion, frame this, blur that, ugh...it made me seasick to watch. I mean, Ricky performing is a special effect by itself. We don't need all this craziness to make it "better."A lot of it is footage of the scenery outside a car window. Spain is pretty and all, but that's not what I paid to see. Most of the conversations are blotted out and covered with music. There are some good clips at the end of Ricky goofing off and one of him doing one-arm pullups (nice arms), but in general I was disappointed. Even the video for Te Extrano, which is on the DVD, is of very poor quality, like they held the camera up to a TV and taped it from there. The "Behind the Scenes" making of that video is in slow motion and shows basically nothing except a few good Ricky facial expressions; again, no dialogue at all. Anyway, I was really bummed out about it. On top of all of that I thought this was a "new" video, but it's not; all of the footage is pre-Vuelve (before 1999). The worst part of all are the cheesy voiceovers that boom out at you about how wonderful Ricky is. I was looking for more info about Ricky, and this really didn't deliver."

"I'm a great fan of Ricky Martin's music. As an artist, he's hugely talented. I expected this video to showcase that talent and put the music first. I found the interspersed 'behind-the-scenes' cuts annoying, as well as the footage from a moving car. Visually, it's boring filler. That's a big failure considering what a wealth of raw material there was to work with. You buy the DVD to see the main event, not an endless parade of roadside scenery. It's like an hour long infomercial. The concert footage is irritating with too many jump cuts and student-level, let's try-everything editing. I had to look away and just listen to the music; not exactly the point of DVD is it?. Simplicity would have saved it from mediocrity. His talent is big enough to do the heavy lifting here. All the tricks just weighed it down. Longer, sustained footage of Ricky performing would have helped. End result: Poor production values, lousy editing, so-so sound quality and unimaginative directing made it ultimately very disappointing."
Not what I was expected

"If you like Ricky Martin's music, don't expect this DVD is going to fill your needs. Music and production quality is poor. Seems that it was made by a low budget producer. All songs are in spanish, so if you expect to see a live performance of Living la vida loca, you'll be upset.Although I am one of his country fellowmen, I have to rate this DVD less than average....POOR!Sorry, this is my honest opinion."
Overall a Bang for your dollar - recommend

"I bought this video and just finished watching it a second time since my purchase a day ago! Yes the other reviews have several valid, yet small points, regarding the footage. It might contain too many cuts and gimmicks (tried to be like MTV); yet that does not stand in the way of great footage from Ricky's European Tour. The songs were incredible and of course the dancing great. Backstage footage was a good bonus because I saw some great moments of Ricky just hanging out with friends and his band. If you are a fan of Ricky's music and performances then the video delivers. I think I might watch it a third time tonight!"
