This has to be one of Denzel's best performances. Everyone that didn't live through the 60s needs to see this wonderful movie.

Denzel Washington plays an attorney stuck in the era of Civil Rights protests and Black Panthers. He sports an unkempt afro, and dresses like a mentally challenged geek--which in a way he is because he's not a people person at all; he blurts responses that seem like criticism to whomever he addresses, but can cite the law books verbatim. It is the most intense character study film I've ever seen. He totally inhabits this strange character with headphones listening to 70s music (liked the soundtrack). It is also a condemnation of the legal system that places people on the criminal treadmill with arbitrary sentencing, as well as of the attorneys that practice this kind of law. Israel has an interesting perspective on the whole of what is wrong with the system. It was a bit of a struggle for me to sit through a movie where I spent much time trying to read Israel's expressions, but it's well worth the watch. I gave it five stars. Will be a keeper for me.

Denzel Washington at his best. I was really loving this but it slowed down near the end bringing it down from a 5/5 rating.
