Movie Reviews

A chance to see a classic lineup
Mark A. Willett | Branson, MO USA | 06/21/2004
(3 out of 5 stars)

"I bought this video expecting a live concert of my favorite version of Steps Ahead (though I'm partial to the original lineup as well), and it IS live, but it's just the group playing in the atrium of the Ny Carlsberg Glyptotek; no audience. Video and audio quality are quite respectable given the age of this film. The playing doesn't have the fire of say, "Smokin' in the Pit", but I would attribute that to the rather sterile recording conditions...the lack of an audience keeps this from being an absolutely amazing concert DVD. What we have instead is some very good performances by some brilliant musicians (Elias was 18!!!) playing very hip modern jazz. Notwithstanding the somewhat cold and impersonal quality this DVD exhibits, it is still great to see this band and these players play, and at this price, hard to beat for a Steps fan."

"16036 · Steps Ahead - Copenhagen Live
Recorded at Ny Carlsberg Glyptotek in 1983
Steps Ahead was a truly starry band and enormously popular not only in jazz circles but far into the rock set. This film provide a rare opportunity to see and hear this star band of the following crew during these recordings in 1983 - recordings of exceptional good quality: Mike Mainieri, vibes; Michael Brecker, saxophone; Eddie Gomez, bass; Eliane Elias, piano and Peter Erskine on drums. Enjoy!"
