This fourth installment of the franchise proves two things: 1) the original movie made enough of an impact on American filmmaking that it could survive three terrible sequels, and still go on to make more beyond this one, and 2) even actors as talented as McConaughey and Zellweger cannot save a movie with a bad script. Henkel's attempt at adding a spiritualist element to the story is lost in an overly-contrived, desperate effort to be convince the audience that this film is "really weird" . . . when much of it is exactly the same sequenced plot elements from the previous movies (e.g. the remote control knee-brace apparatus is just stupid, not weird). I believe the post-climax part of the movie was meant to somehow tie to the woman who escapes in the first film, but I have no idea why Zellweger would know who she is, and this is not explored or explained in any way. Leatherface just looks like a guy in a rubber mask, and clearly not the same Leatherface from the original . . . so is he like the Son of Leatherface? What kind of sociological controls are necessary to consistently replicate that kind of behavior through the generations? Never mind that we are supposed to believe that this family is part of a secret society that terrorizes random people in Texas within a short drive of populated cities . . . or the crop duster . . .
