Intended as a prequel to John Carpenter's movie, this film still feels a lot like a remake as it uses a lot of the same plot components. It would have been better served if it spent more time on building suspense and developing the paranoia concept than rushing to the creature rampages and flamethrowers. Scripting is weak or predictable in several areas (e.g. we just saw the creature go up into the ceiling, so everyone pile outside(?) and look for it around the compound instead of looking up; EVERYONE is reluctant to open their mouths - even with fillings - in an obvious effort to make "suspense"), and the latter half of the movie falls into boring scenes where the director "pads out" the movie to 1.5 hours. That being said, the special effects are very good and the effort to tie into Carpenter's film is certainly consistent.

This put a nice twist with a prequel to the original classic Thing. The CGI was stellar as was the acting by many in this. A must watch for horror sci-fi fans!

Try to watch this "pre-quel" before the 1982 Kurt Russell "sequel" to get a better understanding.
Both are stand alone films but are "joined" together (That'll make more sense once you've watched them.).
