Movie Reviews

Never fret...it's coming to DVD in June '04

"Never fret fans, TVShowsOnDVD.com reported in January that "Tour of Duty - the Complete First Season" is coming to DVD in June of 2004.I, like many here remember this series from the late '80s, when it seemed like Hollywood was pumping out a new Vietnam movie every other month between Platoon, Platoon Leader, The Iron Triangle, Full Metal Jacket, Casualties of War, Missing in Action, Rambo, Siege of Firebase Gloria, etc. Tour of Duty was a true masterpiece, much the same as was 2001's "Band of Brothers". I was fortunate enough to catch an episode here and there, never knowing where and what time this show aired. But what I did see was brilliant.Doing what M*A*S*H should have done, "Tour of Duty" showed us what it was like to live in the "bush" and confront the little Commie bast*rds that were threatening freedom in the South. Oh yeah, it had to do with relying on your fellow soldier to watch your back while you watch his as well.Tour of Duty ran for three complete seasons for a total of 58 episodes between the years 1987 and 1990. Not a bad run considering that it was a CBS series. And like I said, the first season is coming on DVD in June, so if you want to see the entire series released, be sure to do your part and purchase the first season!"

"I have been a fan of Tour of Duty since it first appeared and I
was thrilled to see the DVD set available. When I discovered that the original music was removed I was shocked. It is part of the experience that was the original series. I will not purchase something that is only a part of what it was intended to be. I hope the second season is released as it was intended. I would gladly pay for the DVD's (even if they were more expensive) if they appear as originally broadcast.

Don't be stupid! Just release it already!

"I loved this series and I was too stupid not to tape it while it was on TNT airing in the Chicago area. I just hope the studio will follow the money making trend of releasing shows on DVD. I do not want to resort to trying to out bid some other fool on eBay for copies from the TV on VHS. I want DVD quality and I will pay any amount to have this series in my collection."
Did they cut my song?

"I wrote the episode "USO Down," about the chopperload of USO entertainers shot down in the jungle. When writing the scene where the band says, "Here's the national anthem of Vietnam!" and begins playing "We Gotta Get Outa This Place," I was recalling my own tour of duty with the Marines in Vietnam and having that exact thing occur at a USO show. And I was never more sincere in my writing than when I placed the same song over the helicopter flying away, leaving the boys behind at the end. I haven't seen this DVD, mainly out of fear that those two moments have been ruined by replacement of the song in each case by generic music. How did the studio handle those moments? (Thanks to all who've praised the show here.)"
