Member Movie Reviews Samuel K. (Solvanda) Reviewed on 6/30/2018... One of my all time Scifi favorites. BBC series filmed in Australia in the 80's. The production standards were better than anything the Beeb had produced until then (Scifi-wise.) Think around a million per episode, if memory serves. The series bears a faint similarity to H.G. Wells War of the Worlds, but is very different. The story originates from a trilogy of YA books written in the 70's, which I've been through several times. I think they're the pinnacle of John Christopher's work, who sadly passed away a few years ago. He had a flair for writing post-apocalyptic fare at a time when the genre was rather unknown. After the trilogy, he also wrote a prequel entitled, "When the Tripods Came". You can pick up all four books in a set for around 20 bucks on Amazon. The show went for 2 seasons, each season corresponding to the first two books. Then the BBC pulled the plug on it. They tend to do things like that. So, to get closure, one has to read the 3rd book, viewer beware. Still, the show is well worth the ride. And the austere, futuristic theme tune will be stuck in your melon for years to come.
