Movie Reviews

Like A Breath Of Fresh Air
Arthur Lewin | New York | 03/29/2006
(5 out of 5 stars)

"A unique collection of short films by outstanding Black filmmakers interspersed with vignettes on the moviemaking process. The themes, the settings, the actors and the action are like a breath of fresh air when compared to the usual Hollywood fare. These short films run the gamut from the dramatic, to the comic to the sexy.

Something for everyone including the would-be filmmaker. The fascinating behind-the-scenes clips provide a birds eye view of the intricacies of the moviemaking process.

The camera work is outstanding, the acting quite earnest, and the sets and music help set a truly professional tone. Doubtless, you will like some of the films better than others, depending on your tastes. But they each tell a unique story that emerges directly from the Black experience in America.

You can watch this movie three different ways. First, as is, with the short films and background pieces presented alternately, or view the films separately, and the background pieces separately. Of course, once you become acquainted with all the segments you can, at will, go to your favorites. Surely Urban S.L.A.M. Volume 1 is destined to be a collector's item. And based on the compelling coming attractions, included at the end, Volume 2 will be just as good as this one!"
