Biography: Charles Blackwell was too busy on Broadway working as a dancer, stage manager, author and a technical advisor to have much time for television and film projects. Still, he occasionally dabbled in both. Born and raised in Philadelphia, he became interested in the theater while attending Oberlin College.
After dropping out, he enrolled in Pearl Primus' School of African Dance and upon completion joined her international touring company. Blackwell spent 18 years in a close professional association with producer David Merrick as a dancer and a stage manager. As an author, he was honored with a Tony for writing the book upon which the popular musical The Tap Dance Kid was based. In film, Blackwell can be seen playing "the speaker" in Times Square (1980) and "John Vetta" in The Fan (1981). He has also appeared as a guest star on such television series as L.A. Law and Law & Order. ~ Sandra Brennan, All Movie Guide
