Biography: Ace stuntman Tom Steele (born Skeoch) was as handsome as any of the leading men he doubled in scores of serials and action melodramas, and almost always better paid. In fact, Republic Pictures used to cast their serial heroes for their resemblance to Steele, the only stuntman ever actually under term contract to the studio (the equally legendary Dale Van Sickel, Dave Sharpe, and Ted Mapes were hired per project). Steele, who often portrayed three or sometimes even four different characters in a serial, continued his career well into the television era, retiring in the mid-'80s.
