Following several successful seasons as a stage director, Gardner was brought to Hollywood in 1929 to co-write Gloria Swanson's talkie debut, The Trespasser. He went on to co-direct Royal Family of Broadway (1930) and Grumpy (1931) with another stage transplant, George Cukor.
