Synopsis

In this World War II action thriller, American reconnaissance agents learn that a German submarine is sinking. The doomed ship carries an Enigma Machine, a special coding device that allows high-level Axis forces to send messages that can't be read without a similar encryption mechanism. Obtaining a working Enigma device would be invaluable for the Allied war effort, so a U.S. sub is sent out to rescue the machine. However, German forces have already picked up the sub's distress signal and are en route to rescue their comrades. U-571 features a distinguished cast, including Matthew McConaughey, Bill Paxton, Harvey Keitel, and Jon Bon Jovi. ~ Mark Deming, All Movie Guide

Editorial Review

The DVD of Jonathon Mostow's underwater WWII thriller U-571 supports the film with an impressive range of extra features, including a widescreen, anamorphic transfer, Dolby Digital 5.1 and DTS Audio, and a commentary track with Mostow. Featurettes on the making of the film and the creation and construction of the U-571 submarine add more behind-the-scenes insight, but the disc's historical materials are richer and more rewarding. An exploration of the Enigma, the Axis powers' encryption device; archival U.S. naval film of the capture of U-505; anecdotes from a WWII submariner; and a featurette on the British capture of the U-110 (the story of which inspired U-571) are possibly more gripping -- as well as more historically accurate -- than the film itself. At any rate, the DVD gives equal attention to U-571 and the events on which it was based, making the disc worthwhile to action fans and historical buffs alike. ~ Heather Phares, All Movie Guide

Parents should know: This movie is a bit violent in some scenes, but nothing too graphic. Most of the swearing is in the subtitles (spoken in German).

This movie does try pretty hard to make the German's look like barbarians to justify the US blowing them to bits.

It is also pretty sad, many people die in various ways. (War is Sad) But overall an interesting plot based on actual missions during WWII.
