DVD Synopsis

Dreamworks SKG's second feature-length animated film blends comedy and drama in an unusual historical adventure. Two genial swindlers working as stable hands stow away with Cortez, the legendary Spanish conquistador, as he searches for El Dorado, the lost City of Gold. Luck smiles on the two con men, and they happen to find a settlement in Mexico that they believe is El Dorado; however, while the two exotic strangers are at first embraced by the Mayan people, they've also arrived just in time to be offered up as the next human sacrifice. The Road to El Dorado was directed by Don Paul, who helmed the first DreamWorks animated feature, The Prince of Egypt; Will Finn, a featured animator on Beauty and the Beast and Aladdin; Bibo Bergeron, who worked on Ferngully: The Last Rainforest; and David Silverman. It features new songs by Elton John and Tim Rice, and the voice cast includes Kevin Kline, Kenneth Branagh, Rosie Perez, Edward James Olmos, and Armand Assante. ~ Mark Deming, All Movie Guide

Editorial Review of DVD

=The Road to El Dorado DVD is sure to hold special appeal for those interested in the art of animation. The movie is brought to vivid life with a 1.85:1 anamorphic widescreen presentation and either DTS Digital Surround, Dolby Digital 5.1, or Dolby Digital 2.0 Surround Sound. Unfortunately, subtitles and audio are limited to English only. Special features of interest to animation fans include "The Making of the Road to El Dorado" featurette; feature commentary with directors Don Paul and Bibo Bergeron; "The Basics of Animation: The Color Script," where each scene of animation is commented on by directors Don Paul and Bibo Bergeron and art director Raymond Zibach; and the production notes, where research trips to the Yucatan and new innovations in animation such as Elastic Reality Warp and Spryticle (a water effect) are explained. On the less techie side is a read-along, Elton John's animated music video for "Someday out of the Blue," the theatrical trailer, and cast and crew bios. While there's little here to hold a child's interest, older fans may just consider the wealth of animation info available on this DVD pure gold. ~ Terri Clark, All Movie Guide

This is an except-able movie. Not one of my favorites though.
