Dreamworks Pictures' summer blockbuster
Gladiator has been given its rightful due in this beautiful, double-disc collector's edition. The film is presented in anamorphic, widescreen format, enhanced for 16 x 9 televisions, with full Dolby 5.1/DTS sound. The transfer of the film is flawless, with no visible artifacts or pixellation; the blacks are as dark as can be, with little to no color bleeding; and the lines are crisp and sharp. The soundtracks are also faithfully reproduced, with full Digital Surround and a solid (yet not overpowering) bass track that does justice to composer
Hans Zimmer's booming, epic score. In addition to the superb audiovisual presentation, this set is packed full of special features (including three Easter eggs) which will more than satisfy any fan of the film. First and foremost is the informative commentary track with director
Ridley Scott, which gives great insight into the making of the film. There is also an extensive trailer section, containing all of the theatrical trailers as well as TV spots. The second disc also contains a still gallery, two featurettes (one of which was featured on The Learning Channel), deleted scenes with commentary, an interview with
Hans Zimmer, and perhaps most interesting, an insightful on-set diary kept by young
Spencer Treat Clark, who plays Lucius in the film. The superb quality of this set, combined with unbeatable features and handsome presentation, make it an essential addition to any collection. ~ Andrew Hercock, All Movie Guide
