DVD Synopsis

Hyperactive mayhem results when a mild-manned banker discovers an ancient mask that transforms him into a zany prankster with superhuman powers in this special-effects-intensive comedy. The wildly improvisational Jim Carrey plays Stanley Ipkiss, a decent-hearted but socially awkward guy who one night finds a strange mask. Carrey's trademark energy reveals itself after Stanley puts on the mask and the banker transforms into The Mask, a green-skinned, zoot-suited fireball. The rubber-faced Mask possesses the courage to do the wild, fun things that Stanley fears, including romancing Tina Carlyle (Cameron Diaz). In addition to Carrey's physical talents, the film makes effective use of digital visual effects that bestow the Mask with superhuman speed, insane flexibility, and popping eyes out of a Tex Avery cartoon. The larger narrative, involving the efforts of Tina's gangster boyfriend to destroy Stanley and use the mask's powers for evil, prove less interesting than the anarchic comic set pieces, including a particularly memorable dance number to "Cuban Pete." The film delivered enough laughs to become a surprise hit and, along with the same year's Dumb and Dumber, establish Carrey's status as a comedy superstar. ~ Judd Blaise, All Movie Guide

Editorial Review of DVD

One of the earliest to make it to market from New Line Home Video's Platinum Series, The Mask offers good mastering work in both the picture and sound departments, with a 1.85:1 non-anamorphic image that has excellent colors, even in the trickier scenes, as well as a sharp, but not overly crisp image with few compression artifacts. The transfer serves the computer-generated special effects fairly well. The soundtrack is fairly straightforward Dolby Surround, clear and uncluttered, though given to the usual "sting" effects. The single-layer, double sided disc includes both widescreen and full-frame versions, as well as the French soundtrack, which is actually quite amusing. The disc also includes two deleted scenes, director's commentary, trailer, and cast biographies. Of the deleted scenes, one is more or less complete, including subtitles and music, while the other is missing effects and various shots; both are far from presentation quality. Russell's commentary is low-key, but more than adequate for taking viewers through the details of making the film; those lending an ear to this track will learn a lot about the film and the decisions made in the course of getting it to the screen. ~ Steven E. Is it a kids movie? An adult movie? Whoever this movie is for, it wasn't really for me. Obviously a classic now, for it's time it was perfect. Watching it now, however, it's a little queer for me.

Jim Carrey is by far the best actor for this role. Even if you don't like a lot of Jim Carrey's movies, this is probably one of his best movies. The overall plot is fairly predictable but the movie has a good message to it and the feats the mask accomplishes are hilarious. While Jim Carrey's acting may be too "big" for most people, the mask is supposed to be "big" acting. Hilarious scenes and decent special effects for a mid 1990s movie. Must see at least once, although I know Ive watched it at least half a dozen times since it hit the screen.
