DVD Synopsis

Walt Disney Pictures redefined computer animation with this technically accomplished fantasy of prehistoric life, combining live-action backgrounds with computer-generated animals. After a pterodactyl snatches a dinosaur's egg and accidentally drops it while flying away, the egg is rescued by a family of lemurs, who keep it warm until it hatches. They raise the baby dinosaur, named Aladar, as one of their own, and as he grows to adulthood, Aladar protects the primates that he has come to regard as his family. When a giant meteor appears in the sky, packs of dinosaurs have no idea what to make of the strange fiery light, but Aladar and the lemurs are convinced that they must escape to a safer place before the huge flaming stone destroys their home, leading Aladar to encounter his own kind for the first time. D.B. Sweeney provides the voice of Aladar; other actors in the voice cast include Joan Plowright, Julianna Margulies, Alfre Woodard, and Ossie Davis. ~ Mark Deming, All Movie Guide

Editorial Review of DVD

One look at this DVD, and viewers won't believe it's all animation. One of the most detailed DVDs out today, this is bound to go down as a classic both in animation and children's features. Dinosaur, released by Walt Disney Pictures, is the charming story of a dinosaur mistakenly raised by lemurs. The special effects of the meteor hitting the earth are so realistic, you'll find it hard to believe that this is an animated movie. Because the movie was released digitally, the DVD is created straight from the digital source, and it shows in the sound and quality. The sound is Dolby 5.1 (other options are THX-certified and DTS 5.1) with French and English tracks. It's available for viewing in both standard and 1:85:1 widescreen versions. Along with the awesome visuals and sound, there are plenty of features to occupy viewers long after the movie is over. Highlights include background on how the special effects were created, a documentary on the sound design, a feature on "building a better dinosaur," and several games, including "Dinosearch" and "Aladar's Adventure." Also included are web links and a dinosaur encyclopedia. Disney went all out with this DVD, and it shows. ~ Sherril Steele-Carlin, All Movie Guide
