DVD Synopsis

Blaxploitation icon Pam Grier stars as Foxy Brown, a sexy but streetwise woman whose ne'er-do-well brother Link (Antonio Fargas) is a drug dealer who owes mobsters 20,000 dollars. To get the hoods off his back, Link names Foxy's boyfriend as a government agent trying to wipe out organized crime, and the mob soon has him rubbed out. But Hell hath no fury like Foxy Brown scorned; posing as a hooker to get the inside scoop on the mob, she goes on a crusade to find out who murdered her man, and she exacts revenge with the help of a local activist group. The supporting cast includes cult figure Sid Haig as a bad guy (as usual) and Peter Brown and Kathryn Loder as a seriously kinky couple who rule the local mob. ~ Mark Deming, All Movie Guide

Editorial Review of DVD

Following the success of Coffy, Foxy Brown firmly established actress Pam Grier as the queen of blaxploitation films. The film grain seen in the early night scenes on this DVD soon vanishes, leaving a funky and fantastic 1.85:1 anamorphic widescreen print. The disc has French and Spanish subtitles, a lone English soundtrack, and the theatrical trailer. The only other feature is a definite bonus: an audio commentary by director Jack Hill. Hill, in between comments that reflect his obvious fondness for his actors, details his battles with the production company American International Pictures, which wanted him to produce a low-cost, sex- and violence-laden flick in order to generate quick revenue. Hill had been inspired by reading African-American author James Baldwin's -The Fire Next Time and wanted to insert social commentary into the script. The result of this battle makes for a highly informative and entertaining commentary track for a curious piece of 1970s nostalgia. ~ A.R. Ferguson, All Movie Guide
