Isaac Hayes puts his gun where his groove is in his role as hard-case bounty hunter Mack "Truck" Turner, three years after composing the legendary score for Shaft (1971). Ex-football star turned skip-tracer, Turner specializes in bringing in the criminals police are too scared to chase, and when he's hired to capture sociopathic pimp Gator (Paul Harris), he finds himself confronted by the most vicious killers in the underground scene. Little does Turner know that Gator's woman, Dorinda (Nichelle Nichols), has a deep-running cold streak of vengeance, and has hired ruthless hit man Harvard Blue (Yaphet Kotto), as well as a legion of other like-minded and equally determined assassins, to snuff out Truck's supercharged motor once and for all. Blasting on to DVD courtesy of MGM Home Entertainment's Soul Cinema Collection, Truck Turner features singer Isaac Hayes letting his fists pick up where his mouth left off after scoring the Academy Award-winning theme to Shaft (1971), playing harder-than-concrete skip-tracer Mack "Truck" Turner in this lively and entertaining film.
Offering attractive packaging and a clean and crisp transfer, you can't beat the Soul Cinema Collection for offering a great package for a reasonable price. Letterboxed at 1.85:1 and enhanced for widescreen TVs, the image shows slight age and appears minimally washed out at times, though it is mostly attractive, featuring vibrant color and even skin tones. Film grain and artifacting are surprisingly minimal considering the film's age. The English Dolby Digital Mono soundtrack is remarkably clear and evenly mixed, vibrantly rendering Hayes' upbeat and funky score. Subtitles are offered in easy-to-read French and Spanish, straddling the lower letterboxing of the image. It's great to see that a film this relatively obscure is being preserved and presented so well.
The main menu is attractive, well designed, and easy to use, offering nothing more than a poor transfer of the original theatrical trailer. Though grainy and washed out, it's still booming with music and energy and that unmistakable 1970s movie-trailer feel, providing an entertaining capper to this enjoyable disc. ~ Jason Buchanan, All Movie Guide
