DVD Synopsis

In this science fiction thriller, child psychiatrist Catherine Deane (Jennifer Lopez) has developed a technique that allows her to travel through the minds of her patients. When Stargher (Vincent D'Onofrio), a multiple murderer who methodically drowns his victims and performs bizarre rituals with their bodies, falls into a coma, FBI agent Peter Novak (Vince Vaughn) asks Deane to enter the killer's psyche, in the hope of finding a missing girl whom Stargher has kidnapped; if she's not soon found, in all likelihood she'll die in his torture cell. However, once Deane enters the bizarre world of Stargher's mind, she finds getting out to be a very difficult matter. The Cell was the first feature from director Tarsem, who previously made award-winning commercials and music videos, including the video for R.E.M.'s "Losing My Religion." The supporting cast includes Catherine Sutherland, Marianne Jean-Baptiste, Dylan Baker, and Pruitt Taylor Vince. ~ Mark Deming, All Movie Guide

Editorial Review of DVD

The Cell, a movie some critics labeled all style and no substance, might be the best-looking DVD on the market. To add to that feat, the included supplemental material provides depth and substance, making it clear that the movie's visuals were a labor of love. There aren't enough compliments for the widescreen anamorphic 2.35:1 presentation. Director Tarsem's imagination explodes from the screen, making for an intense, colorful tour de force. The Dolby Digital 5.1 Sound is also stunning, from the twisted sound effects to Howard Shore's wicked score. The "isolated score" audio track makes for a truly spooky experience. Since the visuals of the movie are so mind-bending, the "Behind the Scenes" area and audio commentaries are engrossing. "Style as Substance: Reflections on Tarsem" is a featurette thick with hyperbole, but the cast and crew who praise Tarsem seem justified at every film clip. Vince Vaughn seems oddly agitated during his segments, making for an interesting conclusion. Tarsem's commentary is a candid, rapid-fire treat; he leaves no stone unturned in passionately dissecting his debut feature film. The production team commentary is also interesting, though the fascinating "Visual Effects Vignettes" go deeper into key set pieces. "Interactivities," a brain map and empathy test, are worth a look. The empathy test is meant for fun, but it's pretty powerful in its ability to enlighten and/or disturb. Filmographies and two suspenseful trailers round out this landmark DVD. ~ Tim DiGravina, All Movie Guide

I think Jennifer showed she can play a character with a bit of depth in this movie. Sad, disturbing and though provoking is the storyline of the suspense thriller. Actually it was hard to pigeon hole what type of movie it is. Not a chick flick. There is a serial killer and some graphic type imagery involved. Jennifer uses her unique gift to get inside a psycho mind and the visuals where pretty good. I watched it twice and thought it was good both times.
