DVD Synopsis

Herbert West (Jeffrey Combs) is a brilliant medical student who has perfected a green-glowing serum for regenerating life into dead things -- or even parts of dead things. But a corrupt superior, Dr. Carl Hill (David Gale), assumes control of West's experiments and winds up, by ghastly necessity, using the stuff on his own severed head and body. West and in-over-his-head co-worker Dan Cain (Bruce Abbott) struggle to control the now out-of-control effects of the serum, but the bone-saws and zombies complicate their plans. ~ Buzz McClain, All Movie Guide

Editorial Review of DVD

The 1985 low-budget cult horror classic Re-Animator has been brightened to an impressive shine in a new widescreen (1.85:1) transfer supervised by producer Brian Yuzna. The 2001 version (a 1997 release quickly went out of print) uses a new 35 mm low-contrast print struck from the original camera negative for the transfer. But the print is the only thing new: The double audio commentary tracks -- one featuring candid director Stuart Gordon and the other featuring the cast (Jeffrey Combs, Robert Sampson, Bruce Abbott, Barbara Crampton, and Yuzna), as well as the TV and theatrical trailers, the 20 minutes of tame scenes added to the R-rated version (to displace the gory stuff), and the bonus dream sequence are the same from the 1997 DVD -- and these are left over from the 1995 laserdisc version, which featured Dolby Surround Sound (the new one is digital mono). Still, the title remains popular and there is no doubt that there are plenty of fans without a digital copy (who owned laserdisc players?) who will want to keep this in their collections. ~ Buzz McClain, All Movie Guide

"You agree it's dead now?"

Beware all those who are squeamish or easily offended. Re-Animator is of the old school B-horror movie class that revels in gore, nudity and all around madness. It is the perfect melding of humor and horror, as madly brilliant medical student Herbert West perfects his procedure of reanimating the dead. Once perfected (on a very put-upon cat) West begins to reanimate all the dead bodies he comes across, and since this is a horror movie, he stumbles across quite a few. Again, because it is a horror movie the path to perfect reanimation does not run smooth, and West must face the dire consequences of his actions.
The special effects in Re-animator are quite good for 1985, and the tongue-in-cheek tone of the movie makes them even better. They were meant to be laughed at, even in 1985. The acting is much better than the average horror movie, particularly Jeffrey Combs, as the monomaniacal West. In plot, acting and effects the movie is just fine; its in the details that the movie goes gleefully off the rails, making it the most fun horror movie of all time.
