DVD Synopsis

An adventure tale for movie buffs, Jake Speed deftly lifts scenes from detective films of the '40s through the '70s to bring an added dimension to its spoof of the detective and adventure genres. When a family gets word that their daughter has been kidnapped in Paris, her father comments that they should get "Jake Speed" to find her. However, Jake is a comic strip character, and the reaction is that he might as well ask for Batman. But lo-and-behold, the other daughter Margaret (Karen Kopins) gets a message to meet Speed (Wayne Crawford) and his author, Remo (Dennis Christopher), and the men tell her they must go to Africa, where her sister is being held. After a certain amount of trial and error, they eventually find the nation where she's being held -- which happens to be in the middle of a revolution. ~ Eleanor Mannikka, All Movie Guide

Editorial Review of DVD

This witty action-adventure tale gets a simple, but accurate, presentation for its release on DVD. Jake Speed has been given a letterboxed transfer at the widescreen aspect ratio of 1.85:1, which has been enhanced for anamorphic playback on 16 x 9 monitors. The audio has been mastered in Dolby Digital Stereo. The dialogue is in English with no multiple-language options. The film's original trailer has been included as a bonus. ~ Mark Deming, All Movie Guide

Damian M. (ratchet) wrote on 3/11/2009...

Yet another film which has flashes of Indiana Jones, or maybe, more accurately, Romancing the Stone. Based on pulp comic mens adventure type books, this story follows an adventurer hired to save a woman's sister from white slavery. Much the same set-up as Eaten Alive or even Cannibal Women in the Avocado Jungle of Death, but none of those movies are at all similar. The humor was for the most part lost on me as I didnt care for the actor delivery of the material (which he, apparently, wrote).
