A knowing examination of the psyche of the modern American male, Doug Liman's debut comedy Swingers stars screenwriter Jon Favreau as the sensitive Mike, a struggling actor and stand-up comic looking for romance in the wake of the dissolution of a six-year relationship. Against his better judgment, he hits the town with his pal Trent (Vince Vaughn, in a star-making performance), a retro-hip smooth-talker who calls women "babies" and feels compelled to illustrate to Mike the error of his gentlemanly ways. First in Las Vegas and later in a series of hip L.A. nightspots, the duo and their other pals, including a guy named Sue (Patrick Van Horn), prowl for women, looking for kicks and cheap thrills. Swingers was a modest independent film hit and gained a larger cult audience on video. Unfortunately, its DVD release came in the early days of the format, and it seems highly unlikely that Miramax will re-release it as part of their Collector's Series. Still, the DVD is preferable to video. The 1.85:1 widescreen transfer is not formatted for 16:9 televisions, but still blows the video out of the water. A low-budget film like Swingers might not seem like a title that would require a DVD presentation, but compared to the extremely low-budget look of the film on video -- and even in the theater -- the sharpness of the image and the vibrancy of the colors on the DVD are very impressive. The movie is mostly conversation, but the songs chosen for the film have a chance to make an impact on the Dolby Surround soundtrack, adding to the movie's Rat Pack charm. The original theatrical trailer is also included. The DVD of =Swingers might not have anything to offer in terms of supplements, but it still makes the film look and sound better by leaps and bounds. ~ Oliver Thornton, All Movie Guide
