Shot in 1983 but not released until 1985, this low-budget sci-fi adventure is set in a degenerate society sometime in the near future, with humans thrown back to the level of Neanderthals by nuclear war. Three astronauts, two men and a woman, are in charge of a space station armed with nuclear weapons when World War III erupts on earth. They remain in space to stay out of the conflagration but are forced to crash-land several months after the war has wiped out most of civilization. After the crash, one astronaut is killed, another is captured, and the third stays with the downed space station in a series of chase-and-capture scenes. Sci-fi and action mix in the futuristic 1980s movie Def-Con 4. Anchor Bay has done a good job on this 1.85:1 anamorphic widescreen transfer. The studio has made sure that this is a very clean print sporting only the slightest amount of edge enhancement and grain in a few scenes. Overall, the colors and black levels are well saturated with flesh tones appearing natural. The audio is presented in Dolby Digital 1.0 Mono and sounds very flat and uninspiring. While the dialogue, effects, and music are all clear of any excessive distortion or hiss, the bulk of this soundtrack lacks any true fidelity or depth. No alternate soundtracks or subtitles are available on this disc. The sole extra feature available on this edition of Def-Con 4 is a theatrical trailer for the film presented in anamorphic widescreen. ~ Patrick Naugle, All Movie Guide
