DVD Synopsis

A supernaturally talented magician attempts to undermine the rigid social structure of turn-of-the-century Vienna by using his powers to win the love of his upper-class, childhood sweetheart in director Neil Burger's cinematic adaptation of Pulitzer Prize-winning author Steven Millhauser's short story. Though the ill-fated childhood romance between cabinetmaker's son Eisenheim (Edward Norton) and upper-class Sophie von Teschen (Jessica Biel) eventually resulted in the heartbroken young man leaving Austria to explore the world, his dreams of one day reuniting with the beautiful duchess never faded. Upon returning to Vienna 15 years later as a talented and renowned illusionist, Eisenheim's hopes of a reunion seem dashed when he learns that Sophie is currently engaged to the Crown Prince Leopold (Rufus Sewell). As the tensions between the Eisenheim and Leopold elevate, urbane Chief Inspector Uhl (Paul Giamatti) finds his sympathy toward Eisenheim growing, despite his formal obligations to the powerful prince. ~ Jason Buchanan, All Movie Guide

The plot is well crafted and the characters are fairly three-dimensional. This was a different type of love story and that is the underlying beauty of the movie for me. The battle of the underdog and the lead dog is more of an intellectual battle than a physical one and it is fascinating to watch over and over again.

The narration throughout the move is essential, especially when describing how the ultimate illusion was done at the end. In fact, the illusions were the best I have seen on cinema.

I really enjoyed the director's commentary. It was just as good as the actual movie. The background information was very interesting. It wasn't just the cast watching the movie for the first time with a tip or comment thrown in here and there. They provided great information. It makes a difference for some of us in the industry.

Overall, I thought this was a great movie and I enjoyed it very much. I'll hold onto it for awhile.

I didn't know much about this movie, so I didn't have very high expectations. Let's just say that this was a spectacular movie! I loved everything about it. It was like someone reading you a story, and the twists and turns are amazing. I highly recommend this one.

I love this movie! This is the kind of movie with each actor is well fitted to the part/charater they are portraying.
It is like a good book, just have to keep turning the pages and found out what happens next.
The sound track is beautiful and the illusions are wonderful. Just enough twists and turns to keep things interesting.

Not as predictable as most movies. It has enough action to keep you excited, and plenty of plot twists to keep you interested.
