Director Robert Altman reteams with Cookie's Fortune scribe Anne Rapp for this tale of a Dallas gynecologist and the parade of anxious patients, haggard family members, and potential love interests who come his way. Richard Gere plays the titular role of Dr. Sullivan Travis, a calm, successful, and much sought-after ob-gyn who witnesses his normally stable life come apart over the course of one rainy autumn. As the film opens, Dr. T and his wife Kate (Farrah Fawcett) are preparing for the wedding of their Dallas Cowboys cheerleader daughter Dee Dee (Kate Hudson). Their other daughter -- the Kennedy-assassination conspiracy theorist Connie (Tara Reid) -- has her doubts about the impending nuptials, but Dr. T chalks them up to routine sibling jealousy. Meanwhile, escaping a messy divorce, boozy sister-in-law Peggy (Laura Dern) moves into the Travis household with her three toddler daughters in tow. For release, Dr. T finds solace target shooting and golfing (occasionally at the same time) with his buddies, and at his country club, he meets a beguiling golf pro, Bree (Helen Hunt). When the childlike Kate loses her grip on reality during a flatware shopping spree, Bree offers to give the kindly doctor some lessons in his swing -- both on and off the fairways. Richard Gere stars as a man drowning in a sea of women in director Robert Altman's Dr. T & The Women. Presented in 2.35:1 anamorphic widescreen, this transfer looks very clean with only a few slight imperfections to be found. Aside of a few instances of edge enhancement and shimmer, this is a very vivid looking transfer with solid colors and dark black levels. The audio is presented in Dolby Digital 5.1 in English. This is a nice surround soundtrack that mainly utilizes directional effects with ambient noise and background effects. The bulk of the dialogue is very crisp and clear of any hiss or distortion. No subtitles are included on this disc. This edition of Dr. T & The Women includes a few extra features that should please, starting with a commentary track by director Robert Altman, writer Anne Rapp, and actors Richard Gere, Shelley Long, Farrah Fawcett, Janine Turner, Tara Reid, Laura Dern, Matt Malloy, Andy Richter, Robert Hays, and Wren Arthur. With so many participants, there is bound to be a lot of information stored up in this commentary track, and on that end it doesn't disappoint. Also included on this disc is a short, standard making-of featurette, a collection of five TV spots, a theatrical trailer for the film, some extensive cast and crew files, some thin production notes, and an insightful though all-too-brief interview with director Robert Altman.
