A box-office dud, Blair Witch 2 may enjoy a reincarnation on DVD thanks to Artisan Entertainment. Picture and sound are both noteworthy. The 1.85:1 anamorphic transfer is a decent one, while Dolby Digital 5.1 gives the film's eerie sound design free rein to spook viewers. The extras are rather flaccid, though those with a DVD-ROM drive can enjoy deleted scenes, trailers, and so on. Director
Joe Berlinger offers a very informative commentary, detailing the various video formats used to make the film and providing some great technical insights. Composer
Carter Burwell also provides a scene-specific commentary. One of the more unique special features is entitled "The Secret of Esrever." Basically, the viewer watches a small featurette, then rewinds it to divine a series of clues. Using these clues while watching the feature reveals hidden images and other secrets. While nobody can say the feature isn't original, it's also kind of a hassle to get through, and the clues are rather ambiguous. Lastly, the flip side of the DVD includes the film's soundtrack. This too is a wildly original feature -- other film companies should take note. Overall, while few can champion the film within, this DVD presentation gets points for pushing the envelope. ~ Jeremy Brown, All Movie Guide
