Don't miss the best movie of 2006.
BLOOD DIAMOND is a powerfully gripping, action drama that deals with civil unrest in Africa, particularly conflict diamonds and child soldiers. Leonardo DiCaprio proves once again that he has finally grown up as an actor, taking on much more mature rolls in the past three years, including great performances in the Scorsese films, Gangs of New York, The Aviator, and The Departed. This may be his best performance as Danny Archer, a cocky mercenary in the trade of African diamonds whose life takes a big turn when Soloman, a fisherman who has lost his family due to civil unrest, hides the most sought after diamond around. Portraying Soloman, Djimon Honsou proves once again that he possesses a screen power few actors are capable of. His performance two years ago in In America earned him his first Oscar nomination (the first African actor to be nominated), and there's a good chance he'll take it home this year. A savvy reporter, played by Jennifer Connely in her best role since she earned an Oscar for A Beautiful Mind, joins the team, hoping to expose the big diamond execs buying conflict diamonds. The three spend the remainder of the film getting shot at while they search for the diamond and Soloman's family. Some critics have said that the film doesn't really accomplish the goal of being both an action film and a message film. I certainly got the message. Some of the more violent scenes, including children firing AK-47s at other children, many with smiles on their faces, were enough to chill to the bone. And the standard action, like a car chase through the wilderness, was very well done. But, Blood Diamond is more than just an action or message film. It's an emotional, heart-wrenching journey into a world most Americans would rather not think about, and don't. And that's the very reason why everyone should see it.
