DVD Synopsis
Can anything be bleaker than the shabby slums of Berlin? Yes, argues director Werner Herzog in Stroszek: try Wisconsin sometime. Bruno S.. stars as an ex-mental patient who dreams of the so-called promised land of America. He aligns himself with like-minded prostitute Eva Mattes and elderly, near-senile Clemens Scheitz. Upon their arrival in Wisconsin, the three misfits find that they're just as trapped in Dairy Country as they'd been in Germany--if not more so. The sour and bitter Stroszek earned worldwide critical and commercial acclaim. ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide
One of Werner Herzog's classic films is the hard-hitting Stroszek. Anchor Bay has done a fine job on this 1.85:1 anamorphic widescreen transfer, which features only the slightest amount of grain early on in the film. Otherwise, the print appears very crisp with sharp detail and natural-looking colors. The audio is presented in Dolby Digital Mono and is crisp with only the slightest amount of distortion. While this soundtrack is fairly flat and uninspired, overall it works well within the confines of the film. No subtitles are available on this disc. The extra features for =Stroszek are minimal, though Anchor Bay was kind enough to include a commentary track by director Herzog and moderator Norman Hill. This is a very well-produced commentary that features stories about the cast, the production, and what Herzog wanted to say in his film. Also included on this disc is an anamorphic theatrical trailer for the film. ~ Patrick Naugle, All Movie Guide
