Artisan Home Entertainment brings
Darren Aronofsky's tragic, cautionary tale of addiction to DVD fully uncut and with an exhausting list of extra features in this extremely satisfying release of
Requiem for a Dream.
Attractively letterboxed at 1.85:1, Artisan has provided the DVD with a clean and beautiful transfer of the film that shows well-balanced colors and skin tones, and remains free of any noticeable artifacting. Aronofsky's careful use of color and balance are well represented on the disc, and Matthew Libatique's photography remains attractive throughout, while effectively avoiding becoming washed-out or soft. Presented in Dolby Digital 5.1 Surround, the audio plays a key role in the film and is simply stunning as presented here.
Clint Mansell and the Kronos Quartet's score is haunting and effective as it blasts from the speakers, and full advantage is taken of all surround channels in some remarkably unsettling scenes. Voices remain clear and crisp.
The first thing that will strike unexpecting viewers as they put the disc in the player is the clever and innovative title menu design. The overwhelming list of extra features includes deleted scenes with optional director's commentary, a 35-minute "making of" documentary, a 20-minute segment titled "Memories, Dreams and Addictions," in which actress
Ellen Burstyn interviews -Requiem for a Dream author Hubert Selby Jr., production notes, cast and crew biographies and filmographies, theatrical and television trailers, instant scene access, and a five-minute "Anatomy of a Scene" segment in which Aronofsky discusses the translation from book to film, as well as how he strived to interconnect the two simultaneous stories of decay. An insightful commentary track from Aronofsky, discussing the complexities and rewards of working with his actors, as well as a second commentary track in which Libatique provides technical insight into the visually rich and complicated visual design of the film, round out this impressive and informative Artisan release. ~ Jason Buchanan, All Movie Guide
