The third in the series, combining both the popular Nickelodeon hits Rugrats and The Wild Thornberrys,
Rugrats Go Wild wasn't the hit that Paramount had hoped for, but there is little doubt the young ones will be clamoring for this DVD. Sure to be seen as family friendly, this disc comes in both 2.35:1 anamorphic and pan-and-scan transfers. Kids may not notice, but the image is amazing, with bright, strong colors and perfect line detail. As would be expected, there are no distracting elements such as grain or print scratches. The picture is unquestionably the highlight of this title, since the 5.1 Dolby Digital track lacks any real creative appeal. The surrounds aren't utilized as would be expected from such a recent release, and the almost exclusive use of the front speakers doesn't add any depth to the audio field. While the sound is weak, the supplements are even more so: four deleted songs (which are debatably worse than the already poor ones used in the film), an unused scene, and an alternate ending, all in partial-work print form. Labeled a "featurette" -- though not even two minutes in length -- cast members
Bruce Willis and
Chrissie Hynde talk about singing and working together. Finally, along with a few other promotional pieces for Paramount products is an "interactive" game that even the youngest child could master. The payoff if the game is won? An extremely brief interview with
Tom Kane, the voice of Darwin. Certainly not without merit, this is neither the best of the Rugrats series, nor the most interesting DVD to go along with it. Parents may want to sit this out, but kids will surely be entertained. ~ Trent Fordham, All Movie Guide
