DVD Synopsis

A man finds himself getting an unexpected crash course in the psychology of contemporary women in this romantic comedy. Nick Marshall (Mel Gibson) is a successful advertising executive living in Chicago who has long fancied himself a ladies' man, though he has precious little understanding of women beyond figuring out how to seduce them. One day, Nick receives a substantial electric shock in an accident in his bathroom; while he's not seriously injured, when he comes to, he discovers something remarkable has happened -- he can suddenly hear what women are thinking. At first, Nick finds himself learning all sorts of things he didn't want to know, but he also realizes how this can be used to his advantage -- especially after his old boss, Dan Wanamaker (Alan Alda) is replaced by a woman, Darcy Maguire (Helen Hunt). But Nick begins to feel differently about his unusual gift when he discovers Darcy is infatuated with him, and he finds himself falling for her. What Women Want also features Bette Midler as Nick's analyst, Delta Burke and Valerie Perrine as two of his co-workers, and Marisa Tomei as one of Nick's significant others. ~ Mark Deming, All Movie Guide

Editorial Review of DVD

Fans of this lighthearted romantic fluff will no doubt be pleased with Paramount's DVD edition. The picture is an eye-pleasing 1.85:1 anamorphic transfer that nicely captures the Chicago settings. A film as dialogue-heavy as this one doesn't usually benefit from Dolby Digital 5.1, but certain scenes do stand out, most notably during Mel Gibson's dancing to Frank Sinatra. Director Nancy Meyers and production designer Jon Hutman provide a commentary that is more informative than one might expect. Meyers gives some good behind-the-scenes info and shares some good anecdotes as well. Additionally, there are a pair of featurettes that are mostly promotional in nature, but offer up some good footage of the film being shot, as well as a couple of good bits about the film's creation. A complaint must be lodged about the lack of deleted scenes, as the included trailers show a handful of sequences that were indeed removed from the final cut. Still, it's a minor quibble when compared to the other solid offerings to be found on this DVD. ~ Jeremy Brown, All Movie Guide

Full of surprises and worth it just to see the scene where Mel Gibson dances - not to mention how he looks in panty hose ! Lots of fun !

This is a fun turnabout movie, in which the male chauvinist begins to be able to listen to what is going on in each woman's mind. A fun, excellent movie.

Mel Gibson plays Nick, a male chauvinist advertising executive that suddenly gains the power to be able to hear what women are thinking when he has an accident while toying with women's styling products and is electrocuted.
This movie has some extremely funny scenes that are 5 star worthy but then 5 minutes later it will have a scene that brings it down and does not quite work as well. Mel Gibson is able to bring on some side splitting humor in scenes when he is able to hear a women's thoughts on his love making ability, or when he takes a visit to the therapist. However, there are scenes that are either completely unnecessary or just don't work with the flow of the movie... such as the side plot with a mousy office receptionist.
Although this movie is far from perfect, I would recommend a viewing.
