Based on true story, but hard to believe how diffcult it was to solve the Zodiac killings. Excellent true crime film. You feel the frustration of the detectives and reporters as they face many roadblocks during the investigation. Creepy and unsettling at times. I felt it was a bit long, but so was the actual investiation!

In March of '07, one of the best films of the year came into our midst, in the form of "Zodiac," the latest film from one of the best visionary thriller directors of this day and age, David Fincher.
"Zodiac" follows the investigation of the Zodiac Killer that terrorized San Francisco and its surrounding areas in the late 60s, early 70s. The San Francisco Chronicle heavily reported the murders, namely from laid-back hotshot Paul Avery (a terrific Robert Downey, Jr.), as they received letters from the killer himself, saying he will strike again and giving them clues in the form of symbols. Investigating the crimes, are Inspectors David Toschi (Mark Ruffalo) and Bill Armstrong (Anthony Edwards) who are hot on the trail but far from solving. Somewhat intrigued by the murders is the Chronicles' cartoonist Robert Graysmith (Jake Gyllenhaal), who on his own, pieces some of the clues together.
Graysmith, as you may or may not know, wrote the novel "Zodiac" released in 1991, of which this film is based.
"Zodiac" is an excellent policer, shown to us in a gritty, dark environment. The performances are top-notch and the story is very well-written. Fincher shows us his best work since his masterpiece "Seven" (although not as great). 20 minutes shy of 3 hours, "Zodiac" holds you and gives you vivid insight to just how screwed up this case was.
