DVD Synopsis
Not a remake of the 1934 Helen Morgan vehicle of the same title, Frankie and Johnny stars Elvis Presley as Johnny, a Mississippi gambler, and Beverly Hillbillies regular Donna Douglas as his girl friend Frankie. In keeping with the old ballad, the romance of Frankie and Johnny is threatened by the intervention of seductress Nellie Bly (Nancy Kovack). Nellie brings Johnny luck at the gaming tables while Frankie sees red. Frankie and Johnny was written by onetime Marx Brothers contributor Nat Perrin and directed by future Tonight Show helmsman Fred de Cordova. ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide
Elvis Presley one again graces the silver screen in the 1966 flick Frankie and Johnny. MGM has done an acceptable job of making sure that this 1.66:1 non-anamorphic widescreen transfer. While the color patterns and black levels all look even and bright, it's a shame that MGM didn't put the extra time into making this an anamorphic feature. The audio is presented in Dolby Digital 2.0 Mono and sounds exactly like a Mono soundtrack should: flat and very dull. However, the soundtrack does a serviceable job of making sure that the song highlights are void of any distortion or hiss. Also included on this disc is a Dolby 2.0 Mono track in French, as well as French and Spanish subtitles. For those looking for in-depth detail into the making of Frankie and Johnny, you won't find it here; the only extra feature included on this disc is a theatrical trailer for the movie. ~ Patrick Naugle, All Movie Guide
