Synopsis

Kermit the Frog and Fozzie Bear, from of the large crew of loveably fuzzy characters created by puppetmaster Jim Henson, have embarked on a quest for stardom. They take a trip to Hollywood, riding in or on a wide variety of vehicles along the way. They begin their journey on a bicycle pedalled by Kermit, but friends accumulate along the way, and they change vehicles to accomodate them. They have the additional challenge of fending off the entreaties of the heartless Doc Hopper (Charles Durning), who wants Kermit to make some advertisements promoting fried frog legs. Kermit must also cope with his amorous feelings for Miss Piggy, and hers for him. This appealing children's adventure movie has numerous scenes which do homage to classic films, and features a huge cast of Hollywood greats, from Edgar Bergen to Orson Welles, in cameo roles. A great box-office success, this movie paved the way for a number of sequels. One of the film's many songs, The Rainbow Connection, was nominated for an Oscar. ~ Clarke Fountain, All Movie Guide

Editorial Review

Studios have generally done a pretty poor job releasing family films on DVD; perhaps they believe that younger viewers don't care about all the things that make DVDs such a good alternative to video. Thankfully, as this good Columbia DVD release of The Muppet Movie attests, the studios are starting to realize that there is a large, often adult fan base for high quality family films. This edition of the witty, slyly subversive Jim Henson feature comes in a widescreen transfer, which shows some scratches and blemishes, and a somewhat cleaner Dolby Digital 5.1 audio transfer that comes in Surround Sound. While these transfers are far from perfect, at least the film doesn't only come in a pan-and-scan version like most family features. =The Muppet Movie is divided into separate chapters that make perfect sense and highlight each of the film's ace musical numbers. Extras include a funny, improvised Muppet screen test and numerous theatrical and television trailers. This isn't a perfect edition by any means, and the print could be remastered for future editions, but overall =The Muppet Movie is a marked improvement over the cheap, cavalier treatment that other excellent family films (such as Witches and Fly Away Home) have received on DVD in the past. ~ Nick Dedina, All Movie Guide
