Synopsis

Actor Bruce Willis and writer/director M. Night Shyamalan reunite after the surprise success of The Sixth Sense for this supernatural thriller. David Dunne (Willis) is taking a train from New York City back home to Philadelphia after a job interview that didn't go well when his car jumps the tracks and collides with an oncoming engine, with David the only survivor among the 131 passengers on board. Astoundingly, David is not only alive, he hardly seems to have been touched. As David wonders what has happened to him and why he was able to walk away, he encounters a mysterious stranger, Elijah Prince (Samuel L. Jackson), who explains to David that there are a certain number of people who are "unbreakable" -- they have remarkable endurance and courage, a predisposition toward dangerous behavior, and feel invincible but also have strange premonitions of terrible events. Is David "unbreakable"? And if he is, what are the physical and psychological ramifications of this knowledge? Unbreakable also stars Robin Wright-Penn as Audrey, David's wife; the supporting cast includes Spencer Treat Clark and Joey Perillo. ~ Mark Deming, All Movie Guide

Editorial Review

Unbreakable, M. Night Shyamalan's follow-up to the phenomenally successful The Sixth Sense, comes to DVD with this fine release from Disney/Buena Vista. The disc boasts a widescreen anamorphic transfer that preserves the original theatrical aspect ratio of 2.35:1. Closed-captioned English soundtracks are rendered in Dolby Digital 5.1 and DTS 5.1, while Spanish and French soundtracks are recorded in Dolby Digital Stereo. Spanish subtitles are accessible. Supplemental materials include deleted scenes introduced by the director, a behind-the-scenes featurette, multi-angle capabilities for some scenes, excerpts from Shyamalan's early films, and a pair of collectible illustrations. This is a superb THX-certified DVD. ~ Perry Seibert, All Movie Guide

This is a very carefully thought-out look at the practical side of the "hero" mythology of comics and legends. The ideas shared by Samuel L. Jackson's character are worth spending some time thinking on, and looking farther into. The application of the notion of a bell-curve to his reasoning is insightful.

This movie is well acted, and a delight to watch. From the beginning, Bruce Willis' character is lost, out-of-balance, and trying to establish his footing. Willis plays this perfectly. This movie is a jewel, and well worth spending almost 2 hours watching.
